1. To identify the rank just from the names, you have to have a working knowledge of some taxonomy, for example: the Bengal Tiger.

Kingdom: Animalia – It is in the animal kingdom

Phylum:

Class: Mammalia – This is the type of animal, ie mammal, reptile etc.

Order: Carnivora

Family: Felidae – Cat family

Genus: Panthera – For this you must think what the name means, and Panther means Pan-All Ther-Beast, so the Pathera Genus is all the ‘beasts’ in the cat family.

Species: P. tigris – has the initial of the genus before the specific name.
