Today is a strength day on the workout calendar. To change it up a bit I decided to throw Brazil Butt Lift’s Sculpt into the dvd player instead of P90X’s Legs & Back. Brazil Butt Lift knocks me right out of my complacency and smack back to reality. Reality is Summer is coming…quickly!

Now, don’t go and get the idea that with the name Brazil Butt Lift that one, it’s going to be easy…HA! And two, why would you do in place of P90X Leg & Back? Well, first off, BBL Sculpt is NOT easy…it will make everyone from beginner to advaced get a good full body workout. And secondly…see the first reason. It’s not easy!

Don’t let the light weight concept fool ya. You will get a good workout. The first time did the workout I remember thinking…on this is easy! The next day…OUCH! How did that happen?? It happened because BBL Sculpt is different….it’s unique…it’s like no other Beachbody strength workout. You start with a quick warm up that gets your heart rate going using a nice combination of fimaliar moves. Then it’s weight time.

He starts your off with two weights in one hand for some back work. He starts off simple then adds an element of a lunge…then another element of the arm out for balance. The next thing you know you’re doing a compound move involving the back, legs, glutes, and core. Nice! And he doesn’t stop there. On to squats, which turn into squats with a two arm scoop, ok now adding…squat, scoop, and knee up. You see his progression? He not only moves you nicely in and out of compound moves, he also throws in core and balance work. There are some six segments that by the time you are done you have workout every muscle group with the weights while doing compound move.

Now it’s time to drop to the floor for some floor work. You thought the weight work was unique wait to hear about the floor work. He has taken the basic same old we’ve beening this since the 80′s with legwarmers on and add his own special moves into the mix.

As a girlie girl I do get a kick out of the names he has given his special moves The Little Mermaid Imagine the little mermaind sitting her rock, now while keeping your lower body in place turn your upper body to face away. Place both hands on the floor and do a push up, when you come out from the push up twist your lower body to face the other way. I’ve never seen this move any where before.

While on the floor you will also be using the weights for chestflys and such. Here again he throws in compound move. You from chestfly to chestfly with tabletop legs up, then chestfly with one are remaining up while the other moves slowly down to the floor and back up…..all while having your legs in tabletop position. So you don’t only are working your chest muscles but core and legs as well. And you know…..compound movements give you a better burn.

No body part goes unworked in this uniquely fun sculpt workout.

I know that with eating clean and having a Shakelogy everyday along with intense workouts, I will reach my goals.

Don’t judge a book by its cover, as the saying goes, and if Brazil were a book its cover would surely feature the city of Rio de Janeiro and girls dressed in feathered carnival costumes. However Brazil is far more diverse than just the beautiful city of Rio on which its reputation is built. There is, literally, something for everyone here and often on a mighty scale. The colossal Amazon rainforest is a nature-lovers paradise and the largest tropical forest in the world, the central western savannah area is home to the Pantanal, the largest wetland area in the world and the best area for wildlife viewing while Brazil also boasts 4,300 miles of white sandy beaches fringed with palm trees. As you can gather, it excels at more than just football.

 

My recent trip was to take me to historical Salvador, a vibrant city, alive and kicking with the strong influence of its African heritage. On a Tuesday night the colonial quarter, with its cobbled streets, pulsates to a rhythmic drum beat from street bands set up to play while the locals come out to eat, drink and dance. You get the feeling this is not just for visitors, this is a party for no other reason than it’s a Tuesday. During the day things are slightly quieter and you get time to wander and admire the beautiful colonial churches and colourful buildings. Most have been lovingly restored and are now museums, shops or small boutique hotels interspersed with restaurants serving an intriguing blend of African and Brazilian cuisine, with ingredients such as coconut, ginger, hot peppers, coriander and fish.

 

I was also lucky enough to take a private flight to the Kiaroa eco-resort. This is a small property 30 minutes south of Salvador by plane on the end of the Marau peninsula. The flight itself is a scenic adventure, passing along the lush southern coast of Bahia we landed on a private strip 50 yards from the hotel reception. Although it is a 5 star resort, with all the facilities you would expect, if feels quiet and relaxed, especially after the hustle and bustle of Salvador. Of the 28 rooms, most are bungalows with their own private plunge pools, set amongst exquisite tropical gardens. The property overlooks a long sandy beach, almost private in its emptiness, and being on a peninsular, you get the benefit of both sunrise and sunset, a double treat everyday.

Back to Salvador and I then headed north on the Coconut highway. A lovely 90 minute drive along empty beaches and palm trees, I arrived at the sleepy fishing village of Praia do Forte. Instantly my pulse slowed as I slipped into the local way of life. Praia do Forte is a pretty coastal village home to the hugely successful Tamar Turtle Reserve which was started in 1980 to save Brazil’s five species of sea turtle from extinction.

My trip ended in my most favourite city in the world – Rio. Fun, lively and with a naturally amazing setting, the buildings squeeze into the space between golden beaches and bays and the tropical escarpment, dripping with vegetation.

Small on Top

If you’re small on top, you may want to try the newest, little swimsuits from Brazil. Psychologists interested in dating and attraction have learned a great deal by reading and examining the personal advertisements and ‘lonely hearts’ pages of local and national newspapers. Since we psychologists have benefited from the people who use these services it seems only right that some of the things we’ve found should be given back. In this series of articles I will outline some of the more practically useful findings that have come from this research and provide a summary of the results reported in academic psychology journals, written for those who probably have the greatest interest in this knowledge: the daters themselves.

There is quite a bit of material to cover so I have organised it into a series of six articles:

The Psychologist’s Viewpoint

This article gives an idea of the scope of research using personal advertisements, the way personal profiles are used in research, and the kind of things psychologists can find out when they put their minds to it.

He wants and she is

This outlines research into the things that men say they are looking for in a partner. Alongside this we look at how women describe themselves. Combining these we can assess how accurately women understand what men want and use the right kind of language to attract a man’s interest. This one is particularly useful for the girls and should help you write something for the ‘in your own words’ bit of your profile.

She wants and he is

This article gives the opposite perspective to the previous one, looking at the things that women say they want in a partner and the way that men describe themselves. Do these match up? Have men got it right or are they missing the point completely? This one might help the boys rethink the content of their ‘own words’ parts of their dating profiles.

Like for Like or Opposites Attract?

This article summarises the results in the previous two and uses these to outline the current psychological theories of attraction. This article looks at research into general approaches to dating including the results found by researchers who experimentally placed different versions of personal advertisements and then sat back to see how many and what kind of responses they got.

The final article of this series summarises all that has gone before and places this new knowledge firmly in the context of online dating, describing how these results can be constructively used to make fewer mistakes and to improve your chances of attracting responses to your profile and getting a positive response to your first approach to someone.

Before getting into the results of the research we need to take a brief tour around the ways in which research psychologists use personal advertisements and the kinds of things they can find, so we have some idea of the sort of things that psychologists can and cannot say about personal advertisements and internet dating profiles.

Content Analysis

Personal advertisements have been a rich source of information for social scientists investigating dating behaviours. To give an idea of the scale of this enterprise, my own research in this area is based on the analysis of nearly five thousand advertisements collected from UK local newspapers. Apart from this I have copies of more than sixty research reports published by colleagues in Brazil, Canada, Hungary, Japan, Poland, UK and USA. This adds up to about thirty thousand individual profiles that have been analysed by psychologists, sociologists and other professional researchers. Most of this research has used printed personal ads extracted from newspapers and magazines as these are more useful to us (as explained below) but the information and insights gained can be applied to any situation where first impressions come from written descriptions, so these results are directly relevant and useful to people using internet dating sites.

Creating a profile for an internet dating site usually involves describing yourself on a whole host of listed options such as eye colour (blue, green etc.), smoking habit, attractiveness, salary etc. This information is usually entered into the site using a form. Within this form each person makes their own choices from the options available but because it is a form, everyone has to mention the same kinds of things. In a sense, the dating site has already decided what the important features are and you simply tick the correct boxes when describing yourself and describing the sort of person you want to meet.

With printed personal advertisements there is no detailed form to fill in and you can write whatever you want. The only restriction is on the number of words with an escalating charge per word up to a maximum limit. As a result these advertisements are quite short, averaging about 22 words. This is typically enough space to mention about nine things, whether these are your own attributes (age, hair and eye colour, looks) or things you are looking for in a partner (sense of humour, marital status, age range, personality, height). Given these restrictions we can reasonably expect that people mention the most important things as they see it, so the content of these advertisements tell us what characteristics the writers think are important to the other sex, and what key things they are looking for themselves. For example, a personal advertisement that says “Stunning, curvy and adventurous 22 year old blonde female is looking for a financially secure older man, ideally with own hair and teeth, who will spoil her rotten.” gives a pretty clear indication of what matters to this person and what she is offering in return.

Researchers have taken thousands of personal advertisements and analysed them to look for general patterns. From this, they have identified some very clear differences between the kinds of things that are important to men and women when looking for a partner. They have also looked at how well the self descriptions of each sex matches the features that the other sex says they want, giving an indication of how much each sex understands about what the other sex is looking for. Results from this kind of research are discussed in the articles He wants and she is, and She wants and he is.

Apart from the specific attributes and features mentioned, there are also more general differences in how people write these descriptions. For example women tend to give more detailed information about the sort of person they are looking for than men, while men are more focussed on describing themselves. Looking at a profile from this perspective tells us quite a lot about the approach people take to dating, including whether they are looking for a few high quality matches or just want as many dates as they can possibly get. This research is summarised in the article Blitzers, Boasters and Being Choosy.

Knowing how people describe themselves and the sort of thing they are looking for also allows us to look at broader questions such as whether people are looking for others who are similar to themselves or would prefer a partner who is different but, in some sense, complementary. This is discussed in the article Like for Like or Opposites Attract where we find that both are true once we understand a more basic and useful theory of attraction.

Experimental Research

Apart from examining the advertisements that real people have written in the hope of finding a partner, psychologists have occasionally become active researchers and have placed experimental personal advertisements to see how many and what type of response they get. For example, if two almost identical advertisements are placed and one receives twice as many responses as the other, this tells us that the difference between these ads (which may be as small as one word) has a big effect on the chances of attracting a date.

Some psychologists have also used this type of research to investigate the sort of things that men and women write when responding to an advertisement. This has given researchers another way to classify the different approaches to dating and to identify groups such as the ‘blitzers’ who send responses to everyone in the hope that some of them will score a hit. Results from this experimental research are presented in the article Blitzers, Boasters and Being Choosy.

This article has outlined the organisation and content of this series, has introduced the ways in which psychologists approach dating research, and has indicated the sort of things they may be able to see from their viewpoint as researchers.

Rio de Janeiro is big city who have high and middle class. Have 20 milh habitantes. Have some favelas – they form lower classl. The middle class use drog. The drog is make in favelas by traffics, but more people of favelas are honests. However, sometimes have war between trafficker of one favela with trafficker of outher – its very danger for people who walk between favelas. because trafficker (deshonest) kill themselvs. Policeman use big armaments to kill trafficker. My mother and my 2 system live and work at Rio de Janeiro. One of my sister is lf army. Rio is danger when have war between traficker at favelas(favelas stay at big mountains). Rio have beautiful girls and beaches and good districts is Leblon, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca (danger is Rocinha favela), but I dont like this districts because have favelos around. I like Angra dos Reis, Saquarema, Quissamã, where no have favelas and traffics and have good people and beautiful girls, beaches and no have thiefs.

When I live in Rio, and I go to favelas to Crinstian Misson (Im catolics) I conclued who Rio have some favelas because dont have social politics of habitation and family program, for some years ago. Is very bad see this.

So how tough of a time do Physicians and Surgeons have when it comes to dating and being with those they love?

I am not a doctor or physician myself, I work as an engineer, pursuing an MBA. I don’t really keep close with my doctors but I have heard that doctors have a very tough time hooking up with good looking women because of their very busy work schedule and they rarely have time for social life.

I know few physicians who once finished residency work truly unusual hours consistently. My acquaintances in the field (and I have many) work about he same number hours (albeit sometimes at different times) as other higher end professionals. (I have seen studies that support that assessment).
This is no longer the era of Marcus Welby, M.D. the solo practitioner who is available 24/7. Physicians usually practice in groups to share coverage/calls etc. Often they have CRNP’s and PA’s who do rounds, do weekend office hours, answer customer calls on weekends/holidays. etc.

Those who choose 80 or more hour weeks do so because they want to, are driven, are greedy, can’t believe anyone else can do their work. They are the same as the 100 hour per week CEO. they canot be forced to do that.

They tend to have longer more frequent vacations and attend more conferences than other professionals I know. (Event planners know physicians attend more conventions/convocations than any other occupation followed by bankers and insurance industry executives.)

Its a demanding field, very highly paid, responsible, prestigious: I never heard of any who couldn’t find a woman.

These are just my observations based on a lot of close associations over many years. My observations are not scientific.
My brother practices medicine as well as two first cousins and a good number of assorted clients.
In summary, getting a woman should be little problem if you are a decent guy.
